The early years of childhood from 3 to about 5 years are stages in a child’s development that bring a lot of joy and hence the concept ‘magic years’. This is the stage when the baby is now grown, past the toddling age and is able to listen to instructions and form social bonds.
Imagination is at play, so is an insatiable appetite to learn new things. In the magical years phase, the child begins to develop interests, like the love for a dog or cat, cartoons etc.. They are attracted to playing outside, coloring, painting and such like activities. There is so much enjoyment in discovering the surroundings for both parent and child. This is the beginning of an inquisitorial and imaginative journey for the 3 to 5 year olds.
In the ‘magical years’ cycle, the child is now able to perform basic social tasks and will be asking questions and able to respond in five or six words. Significant steps like speaking, telling stories, knowing his/her name and engaging in endless conversation and questions of why the chicken is laying eggs or why the sky is blue will be common.
The child will also be developing cognitive skills and will be anxious to engage in mental activities and physical movements. The child is now such a busy bee, who is all over the place and will love following you around to help you with little chores. They will now enjoy outdoor activities like playing ball, basic riding on a tricycle or self-bathing, choosing own clothes to wear and to also dress or undress.
Analytical skills will begin to develop and the child will begin to distinguish colors, sort objects in shapes, sizes and colors; basic picture reading; and storytelling, understand the concept of 1,2,3 counting; meals, morning and afternoon and bedtime. The child is also able to coordinate hand finger skills, like handling books, using paper scissors, screw and unscrew jar lids to opening cupboards. He or she will most surely enjoy block building activities
pretend play and fantasy.
As a mother, you will note that your 3-5 year old is not only becoming more independent physically, but also emotionally awakened and is displaying fewer tantrums. He or she will start forming social bonds and will also be eager to make friends. Social sharing activities are encouraged at this stage where the activity involves other 2 or 3 kids as well as family games and pretend play activities. The emotive well-being of a child is developing and the child will begin to show a wide range of emotions, such as excitement, being sad, angry, happy, or bored.
This is an exciting age for a 3 to 5 year old as she or he begins exploring, socializing, and learning. It is important to look for educational toys that promote analytical and solving problem skills and toys that will prep them for kindergarten or preschool.
Most of all enjoy these magical years and spend time together as these are valuable years that will create beautiful memories that will last forever.
